Google Trends gets Gemini AI to speed up data research
Google is rolling out a major update to its Trends Explore page, integrating Gemini artificial intelligence to automate the research process for journalists, marketers, and analysts. The new capabilities, announced Wednesday, are now available on desktop browsers.
The core objective of this redesign is to eliminate the manual labor traditionally required to parse search interest data. By leveraging Gemini, the platform now identifies and compares related trends automatically, surfacing insights that might otherwise remain hidden during standard manual exploration.

New Interface and Data Features
Beyond the AI integration, Google has overhauled the visual experience of the Explore page. Users will notice specific design updates aimed at improving data readability:
- Visual Clarity: Dedicated icons and color-coding for every search term simplify tracking lines on the graph.
- Expanded Comparison: The platform now supports a higher volume of simultaneous search terms.
- Rising Queries: The amount of related rising queries displayed across timelines has been doubled.
- Side Panel Interaction: A new sidebar provides automated trend comparisons and suggests specific Gemini prompts to steer deeper investigation.
Practical Application
Google demonstrated the utility of the update using search interest in dog breeds. When analyzing terms like “golden retriever” or “beagle,” the AI can now populate the interface with up to eight distinct search terms simultaneously. It further assists by recommending related categories, such as “hypoallergenic dog breeds,” allowing users to filter by geography, timeframes, or specific property types.
This update represents the latest step in Google’s strategy to embed Gemini across its ecosystem, following similar integrations in Search, Gmail, Maps, and Docs.
