Google is beginning the transition from Google Assistant to Gemini on the Google TV Streamer, aiming to provide a more intuitive and conversational interaction for users. The integration of Gemini allows the streaming device to understand nuance and context in entertainment queries. Instead of searching for specific titles, users can now ask the AI to bridge the gap between different preferences, such as requesting movies that satisfy both drama and comedy fans simultaneously.
Beyond finding content, the AI assistant can help viewers re-engage with series they have put on hold. Users can inquire about specific plot points from previous seasons to quickly get up to speed. Additionally, Gemini can help identify trending content with broader queries, such as asking for the most popular new hospital dramas currently generating buzz.
Beyond entertainment
The capabilities of Gemini on the Google TV Streamer mirror the functionality found on mobile devices, extending the AI’s utility into general information and education:
- Educational support: Users can request simplified explanations for complex topics, such as asking the AI to explain volcanic eruptions to a child.
- Practical guidance: The assistant can provide step-by-step instructions for DIY projects or cooking recipes, utilizing relevant YouTube content to guide the user.

This update is part of a broader strategy first outlined at CES in January, which seeks to phase out Google Assistant in favor of Gemini across the company’s entire hardware portfolio. The Google TV Streamer joins a growing list of supported hardware, including the Walmart Onn 4K Pro.
The rollout follows previous announcements regarding the integration of Gemini into specific television models. Google has confirmed plans to bring the AI to select 2025 releases from Hisense—specifically the U7, U8, and UX models—as well as TCL’s QM7K, QM8K, and X11K series throughout the year.
