HBO Max Hikes Subscription Prices Across All Plans
Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed a broad price increase for its streaming service, HBO Max, intensifying the ongoing trend of rising costs across the subscription video-on-demand industry. The adjustments, which took effect Tuesday for new subscribers, impact every tier offered by the platform.

Updated Subscription Rates
The company has implemented tiered increases across its monthly and annual billing structures:
- Basic with Ads: Now $10.99 per month (+$1) or $109.99 annually (+$10).
- Standard Plan: Now $18.49 per month (+$1.50) or $184.99 annually (+$15).
- Premium Plan: Now $22.99 per month (+$2) or $229.99 annually (+$20).
While new customers are subject to these rates immediately, existing subscribers will see the updated pricing reflected on their first billing cycle on or after November 20. This adjustment marks the second price hike for the service since June 2024.
Strategic Rationale and Future Outlook
The price adjustments follow comments made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference last month. During the event, Zaslav signaled the upcoming changes, arguing that the platform’s current offerings were undervalued.
“The fact that this is quality — and that’s true across our company, motion picture, TV production, and streaming quality — we all think that gives us a chance to raise prices,” Zaslav stated. “We think we’re way underpriced.”
Beyond subscription fees, the company is also preparing to address account sharing. Zaslav confirmed that a crackdown on password sharing is on the horizon for the platform, which would align HBO Max with the policies recently adopted by competitors like Netflix and Disney+. The move places HBO Max among several major services, including Disney+ and Apple TV+, that have all announced or implemented rate increases in recent months.
