Hinge Launches AI Tool to End Boring Dating App Messages

Dating app fatigue often stems from a common friction point: users matching with profiles only to face silence or uninspired openers like “How are you?” To combat this stagnation, Hinge has introduced “Convo Starters,” a new AI-driven tool designed to help users craft more engaging first messages.

The feature functions by analyzing a user’s photos and prompts to generate three personalized suggestions for opening a conversation. For instance, if a potential match features a photo of themselves playing chess, the AI might suggest a topic centered around board games, helping to bypass the pressure of drafting an initial message from scratch.

The Impact on Dating Success

Internal research from Hinge suggests that the strategy of adding a personal touch to a “like” yields tangible results. According to the company:

  • 72% of users are more likely to consider a match when a message accompanies the “like.”
  • Daters who include a comment are twice as likely to successfully arrange a date.

This rollout follows the company’s previous implementation of AI-driven Prompt Feedback, which coaches users to provide more descriptive and engaging details about their lives to improve their profile quality.

Navigating AI Skepticism

Despite the push for automation, Hinge faces a generational divide regarding the use of technology in romance. A Bloomberg Intelligence survey indicates that Gen Z users remain significantly more skeptical and uneasy about employing AI for profile curation or messaging compared to older demographics.

Hinge’s parent company, Match Group, continues to prioritize these advancements, allocating between $20 million and $30 million toward artificial intelligence development initiatives across its portfolio.
