Illinois Driver Charged After Fatal TikTok Livestream Crash

An Illinois woman is facing two felony charges after allegedly striking and killing a pedestrian while broadcasting live on TikTok. Authorities in Zion, Illinois, confirmed that Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, known on the platform as “Tea Tyme,” was taken into custody following the fatal incident.

The Zion Police Department has formally charged McCarty-Wroten with reckless homicide and aggravated use of a communications device resulting in death, as reported by The New York Times. The charges stem from a collision that resulted in the death of Darren Lucas, who succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital.

Evidence and Investigation

Investigators analyzed surveillance footage of the scene, which reportedly captured McCarty-Wroten’s vehicle entering an intersection despite a red traffic signal. According to police findings, the driver did not appear to decelerate or alter her path before the impact occurred.

The incident gained additional attention due to a recording of the livestream, which has since been redistributed by other users on social media. In the footage, a woman identified as McCarty-Wroten is seen speaking into her device when a loud impact is heard. A child’s voice is audible offscreen asking about the noise, to which the driver responds: “I hit somebody.”

Legal Defense

Representing the accused, her legal counsel stated to the Times that the defense intends to demonstrate that the incident was a result of negligence rather than a deliberate or reckless act. “Evidence will show that what happened was an accident, was a negligent act, but was not an intentional or reckless act,” the lawyer said.
