India’s App Market Hits $300M in Q1, Led by Global Giants
India’s mobile application ecosystem reached a record-breaking financial milestone in the first quarter of 2026, with in-app purchase revenue climbing to $300 million. This figure represents a 33% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data from Sensor Tower.
Despite the rapid surge in monetization, the market remains heavily influenced by international players. Global platforms, including Google One, Facebook, YouTube, and ChatGPT, currently capture the majority of consumer spending in the region.

Non-gaming applications emerged as the primary growth engine during the first quarter, accounting for over $200 million in revenue—a 44% year-over-year climb. Key categories fueling this expansion include utility tools, video streaming services, and generative AI platforms.
Market Evolution and Spending Trends
The annual revenue trajectory for India’s app market has shown significant momentum, rising from $520 million in 2021 to over $1 billion in 2025. Projections indicate this figure could reach $1.25 billion by the end of this year. While annual download volumes have plateaued at approximately 25 billion, the time users spend within apps is increasing, signaling deeper engagement.
Donny Kristianto, principal market insights manager at Sensor Tower, noted that the market has reached a state of maturity regarding downloads, shifting the focus toward monetization as digital payment habits become more deeply ingrained among the population.
Key Areas of Growth
- Generative AI: Downloads in this sector surged by 69% year-over-year, with ChatGPT remaining a leader in both reach and revenue.
- Short Drama: This category saw explosive growth, with download volume increasing by more than 400%, driven by apps such as FreeReels.
- Video Streaming: Domestic players like JioHotstar and Sony LIV remain highly competitive, with video streaming services responsible for approximately half of the top 10 revenue-generating apps.
Despite these gains, the average revenue per download in India remains modest at roughly $0.03. In contrast, markets in Southeast Asia and Latin America typically see more than $0.20 per download. However, the diversification of app categories suggests that Indian consumers are increasingly willing to pay for a broader range of digital services as the market continues its monetization journey.
