CONTEUDO:

Instagram is tightening its rules regarding content discovery, announcing a shift that will penalize accounts that rely on republishing work they did not create. Starting now, profiles that primarily share photos and carousels composed of third-party content will be ineligible for recommendations across the platform.

This policy change extends protections previously reserved for Reels to the static photo and carousel formats. By restricting the reach of content aggregators, Meta aims to curb the circulation of recycled media and ensure that users who produce original work receive better distribution and recognition.

Defining Originality

The platform has clarified what it considers “original” content to avoid penalizing creative adaptation. According to the company, qualifying content includes:

  • Material wholly created by the user, such as photos or videos captured by them.
  • Content that reflects a unique perspective or design.
  • Third-party content that has been substantially edited to add value.

Instagram explicitly noted that meme creators are still encouraged, provided they incorporate their own commentary, humor, or creative layering. “The best meme creators take third-party content and make it unmistakably theirs by layering in a perspective, joke, or context that wasn’t there before,” the company stated in a blog post.

What Does Not Qualify

Low-effort reposting tactics will not be protected under the new guidelines. Specifically, the platform will not classify the following as original content:

  • Simple edits, such as modifying video speed or adding watermarks.
  • Taking screenshots of another user’s post, even if that user is credited.

It is important to clarify that this change does not impact the content that users see from accounts they actively follow. Instead, the update specifically targets the recommendation engine, meaning these aggregator accounts will no longer appear in the “Discover” tab or as suggested content within user feeds.
