Instagram Reels arrives on TV with new Amazon Fire TV app

Instagram is officially moving beyond mobile screens, bringing its short-form video feed, Reels, to the living room. The social media giant announced on Tuesday the launch of a dedicated experience, dubbed “IG for TV,” which debuts first on Amazon Fire TV devices.

Strategic expansion into the living room

The move represents a clear effort to capture the attention of viewers who are increasingly using televisions for short-form content, a space currently dominated by platforms like YouTube and TikTok. By optimizing for the TV interface, Instagram aims to position itself as a viable alternative for users seeking quick entertainment during downtime, functioning similarly to how one might browse through traditional television channels.

The application is designed to be highly personalized, curating video feeds based on the specific creators and content themes a user already engages with on the mobile app. To streamline navigation, the interface organizes videos into specific categories, such as music, comedy, and lifestyle.

Key features of the TV experience

The “IG for TV” app introduces a viewing model tailored to the television environment, prioritizing continuous playback to reduce the need for manual interaction. Key functionalities include:

  • Automatic Playback: Videos transition to the next clip automatically, removing the need for constant scrolling.
  • Interactive Controls: Users retain the ability to manually skip to the next reel, like videos, read comments, and share content.
  • Account Flexibility: The app allows users to pair their existing Instagram account or connect up to five accounts to a single household device. Alternatively, users can set up a profile specifically for TV viewing.

It is important to clarify that this new venture is distinct from “IGTV,” the company’s previous attempt at long-form video, which was discontinued in 2022.

A vision from the top

The development of a dedicated television interface follows remarks made by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in October. During Bloomberg’s Screentime event, Mosseri highlighted the television as an “increasingly important surface.”

At the time, Mosseri acknowledged that the company had been slow to adapt, stating, “We’re exploring TV. TV is an increasingly important surface, it’s been very important for YouTube… it’s been very important for TikTok. So we’d like to figure out how to make sure that we show up in a compelling way on all the relevant devices.” He further added that he considered the lack of an earlier TV strategy a mistake for the organization.
