Jeff Bezos’s Prometheus AI Startup Raises $12B at $41B Value
Prometheus, an ambitious startup dedicated to creating an “artificial general engineer,” has secured $12 billion in a new funding round. The investment brings the company’s total valuation to $41 billion, marking one of the most significant capital injections in the history of the physical AI sector.

The company, co-founded by Jeff Bezos and former Verily executive Vik Bajaj, attracted backing from major financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock, alongside a personal investment from Bezos himself. This latest capital infusion follows an initial $6.2 billion raise during the company’s launch late last year, as reported by CNBC.
Automating Complex Engineering
Prometheus aims to revolutionize how physical systems are created. Its primary objective is to develop software capable of automating the design and manufacturing of intricate technology, ranging from jet engines to advanced drug compounds.
While the startup currently employs 150 people across offices in London, Zurich, and San Francisco, it has kept the specifics of its technical breakthroughs private. Bezos noted that a substantial portion of the newly raised capital is earmarked for the company’s massive compute requirements.
The Debate Over Labor Scarcity
The startup’s mission to replace large segments of traditional engineering work has sparked a debate regarding the future of the workforce. Unlike many tech leaders who warn of widespread job displacement, Bezos suggests that AI will drive productivity gains leading to what he describes as “labor scarcity.”
“Significant productivity in the economy is going to raise the standard of living,” Bezos stated. “People who today have two-earner households, they’ll become one-earner households. Maybe some people who are working overtime will stop working overtime.”
Bezos’s perspective on labor arrives at a time when Amazon, where he serves as executive chairman, has undergone significant workforce shifts. Under CEO Andy Jassy, the retail giant has moved toward increased automation while implementing tens of thousands of layoffs globally.
The Rise of Physical AI
The massive valuation of Prometheus highlights a growing trend among venture capitalists: moving beyond pure software toward “physical AI.” Investors increasingly view this sector as more defensible than traditional software models, arguing that the complexity of the physical world provides a competitive moat that code alone cannot replicate.
