The minimalist Light Phone III is now available for immediate purchase through a new partnership with Noble Mobile, a network founded by entrepreneur and politician Andrew Yang. The collaboration marks the first time the device has been offered without a long wait, aiming to provide a seamless entry point for those looking to reduce their screen time.

Customers can secure a Light Phone III by signing up for a two-year Noble Mobile contract at $50 per month, totaling $1,200 over the term. This arrangement bypasses the standard $699 upfront cost and the lengthy shipping delays that have previously hampered the startup, which otherwise estimates wait times stretching until September for independent orders.

Incentivizing Digital Minimalism

The core appeal of the Noble Mobile plan is a financial incentive to use less data. The specific plan for Light Phone users includes 5 GB of data, with the potential to receive a $5 rebate for each gigabyte that remains unused at the end of the billing cycle. This aligns with the Light Phone’s philosophy, which is designed to minimize the user’s reliance on the constant connectivity that defines modern smartphones.

Joe Hollier, co-founder of Light, emphasized that the partnership lowers the barrier to entry for users tired of what he describes as a “parasitic relationship” with their devices. Since the launch of the Light Phone III last spring, the company has successfully shipped 20,000 units, despite ongoing supply chain challenges like the RAM shortage impacting the tech industry.

Design Philosophy and Functionality

Founders Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang met in 2014 at Google’s 30 Weeks incubator. Their vision for the Light Phone III was to create a tool that avoids the “attention and advertising layer” of standard smartphones. Unlike its predecessors, the third-generation model features an OLED screen and cameras, a design choice that sparked internal debate among the founders.

Key features of the device include:

• Essential Tools: Navigation and directory apps that allow for basic utility without the distraction of social media feeds.

Hollier notes that users have found creative ways to integrate the device, with some maintaining a second, SIM-less smartphone for specific tasks via the Light Phone’s hotspot, or even opting for two distinct phone numbers to maintain a work-life balance.
