Meta Discontinues Quest 2 and Quest Pro Headsets
Meta is officially phasing out two prominent devices in its virtual reality lineup: the Quest 2 and the Quest Pro. The decision follows the announcement of the Quest 3S, which now serves as the company’s primary entry-level hardware option.
The company confirmed that it will stop selling both the Quest 2 and the Quest Pro once existing stock is exhausted. This transition is expected to conclude by the end of the year, marking a shift in Meta’s strategy as it focuses on its newer generation of mixed reality hardware.
Strategic Shifts in the VR Lineup
The retirement of the Quest 2 comes after four years on the market, as the device officially reaches its fourth anniversary this October. While Meta previously maintained the headset as a budget-friendly entry point into its ecosystem, the newly introduced Quest 3S effectively replaces it with a $300 starting price point.
The Quest Pro, which launched in 2022, faced a different challenge. Originally positioned as a high-end enterprise solution for mixed reality, the device saw its value proposition diminished by the release of the standard Quest 3. The latter offered comparable or superior performance at a more accessible price, rendering the Pro model largely redundant within the current portfolio.
Availability of Accessories
While the headsets themselves are being phased out, Meta plans to maintain support for associated hardware for a longer period. According to the company, the following items will remain available for purchase after the headsets are off the shelves:
- Carrying cases
- Touch Pro controllers
- Quest 2 Active Pack
- Various legacy accessories
Regarding the transition, Meta noted, “With Quest 3S on the shelf, we’re officially winding down sales of Quest 2 and Pro. We’ll be selling our remaining headsets through the end of the year or until they’re gone, whichever comes first.”
The move coincides with a broader lifecycle management of older hardware. Notably, Meta is also sunsetting security patch updates for the original Quest headset starting in September. While specific timelines for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro have not been detailed, security support for these devices is expected to continue for the immediate future.
