CONTEUDO:

Meta is temporarily disabling access to AI-powered characters for teenage users across its suite of applications. The company confirmed that this global suspension is not a permanent withdrawal, but a strategic pause intended to facilitate the launch of a redesigned, safer version of the feature.

The decision to pull the current AI characters follows direct feedback from parents and guardians, who have consistently requested greater visibility and authority regarding how their children interact with generative AI. According to Meta, the upcoming iteration will feature built-in parental controls designed to ensure interactions remain within age-appropriate boundaries, focusing on topics like sports, education, and hobbies.

The restriction applies not only to users who have registered with a teen birthday but also to those identified as teens by Meta’s internal age-prediction technology. The company stated that once the updated experience is ready, it will be available to all users, though the integration of parental supervision will remain a priority.

Regulatory and Legal Pressure

This shift in strategy occurs as Meta faces mounting legal scrutiny regarding the impact of its platforms on minors. Next week, the company is scheduled to face a trial in New Mexico centered on allegations that it failed to protect children from sexual exploitation on its platforms. Furthermore, the company is preparing for a separate trial concerning claims that its social media platforms contribute to addiction, a case in which CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify.

The broader tech industry is similarly under pressure to tighten guardrails around AI for younger demographics:

  • Character.AI: Implemented restrictions last October to prevent users under 18 from engaging in open-ended chatbot conversations.
  • OpenAI: Introduced specific safety protocols for ChatGPT, including the implementation of age-prediction tools to enforce content limitations.
  • Internal Safety Measures: Meta previously introduced Instagram features modeled after PG-13 ratings, which restricted teen access to content involving graphic drug use, nudity, and extreme violence.

As reported by Wired, Meta has also sought to restrict the scope of discovery in legal proceedings regarding the influence of social media on teen mental health.
