Meta Tests Stand-Alone App for AI-Powered ‘Vibes’ Videos

Meta is expanding its AI-driven video strategy by testing a dedicated, stand-alone application for “Vibes.” The platform, which allows users to generate and share short-form videos entirely through artificial intelligence, is moving out of the broader Meta AI app to operate as a focused, independent experience.

Since its initial rollout last September, Vibes has functioned as a feature within the Meta AI ecosystem, offering a feed similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels but populated exclusively by AI-synthesized content. By spinning the tool into its own app, Meta aims to sharpen its competitive edge against rivals like OpenAI’s Sora, which entered the space shortly after Vibes debuted.

Building a Dedicated AI Feed

Meta confirmed the testing phase in a statement, noting that the move follows positive user engagement patterns. “Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” the company stated. Executives cited a growing trend of users leveraging the tool to produce, browse, and distribute AI content among friends.

The functionality of the new app mirrors the existing toolset, allowing users to:

  • Generate entirely new videos from scratch.
  • Remix existing content found within the feed.
  • Customize creations with new visual elements, music layers, and stylistic adjustments.
  • Share finished clips via direct messages, or cross-post to Facebook and Instagram Stories and Reels.

Future Monetization and Subscription Plans

While the company has not disclosed specific user metrics, it reports that interaction with Meta AI has grown steadily, fueling the decision to create a more immersive environment for the format. Internal data suggests that sharing and collaboration via direct messages on Vibes closely follow the usage patterns observed on Instagram Reels.

The shift toward a stand-alone product also aligns with Meta’s broader financial strategy. The tech giant recently revealed it is exploring premium subscription models across its primary social platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. These upcoming tests will likely extend to Vibes, where Meta plans to transition from a fully free model to a “freemium” structure. Under this approach, while base creation will remain accessible, users will have the option to subscribe to unlock expanded production capabilities each month.

The development was first reported by Platformer, as Meta prepares to roll out these subscription tests in the coming months.
