New Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma Vows No ‘AI Slop’
Microsoft has initiated a significant leadership transition within its gaming division. Following the departure of Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer and Xbox president Sarah Bond, the company has appointed former Meta and Instacart executive Asha Sharma to lead the unit.

Sharma, who most recently served as the president of Microsoft’s CoreAI product, assumes the role at a pivotal moment. The appointment signals a strategic pivot toward integrating advanced technology into the company’s gaming ecosystem, which has previously explored initiatives like AI-driven gaming companions and experimental AI-generated content for titles such as Quake II.
Defining the Future of Play
In an internal memo first reported by The Verge, Sharma outlined a vision that balances technological advancement with creative integrity. While acknowledging that artificial intelligence and new monetization strategies will inevitably shape the future of interactive entertainment, she set firm boundaries regarding the quality of the company’s output.
Sharma explicitly committed to the following principles for the division:
- Maintaining the artistic nature of games, which she emphasizes must be “crafted by humans.”
- Prioritizing the development of high-quality titles that resonate with the player community.
- Maintaining a strong focus on the Xbox brand as a central pillar of the business.
Addressing potential concerns regarding automation in game development, Sharma stated, “We will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop.”
By framing games as a medium of human expression supported by innovative tools, the new leadership aims to navigate the industry’s shift toward automation without compromising the core value proposition of Microsoft’s gaming portfolio.
