Niantic Seeks Sale of Gaming Division for $3.5 Billion

Niantic, the augmented reality pioneer behind the global sensation Pokémon Go, is reportedly moving to divest its game development arm. According to reports, the company is in discussions regarding a potential $3.5 billion deal to offload the division.

The prospective buyer is mobile gaming developer Scopely, a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabia-based Savvy Games Group. Both Niantic and Scopely have yet to issue official statements or respond to inquiries regarding the rumored transaction.

A Legacy of Augmented Reality

Niantic established itself as a leader in location-based mobile gaming through its unique approach to augmented reality. The company first garnered industry attention with its debut title, Ingress, which introduced a territory-control mechanic tied to real-world geography. However, the firm achieved unprecedented scale in 2016 with the launch of Pokémon Go, which transformed into a cultural phenomenon.

Following the massive success of Pokémon Go, the company struggled to replicate those results with subsequent releases. This difficulty led to a series of strategic pivots and downsizing efforts over the past few years:

  • 2022: The company reduced its workforce by 8% and discontinued four projects, most notably Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
  • 2023: A further 230 employees were laid off, accompanied by the cancellation of planned games based on the NBA and Marvel franchises.

Shifting Focus Toward Geospatial Tech

As the company navigates these potential organizational changes, its public roadmap has increasingly leaned into technical infrastructure rather than pure entertainment. Last year, Niantic enhanced its Scaniverse application, enabling users to generate 3D models of real-world objects and contribute that data to a broader developer ecosystem.

In November, Niantic announced intentions to develop a large geospatial model. This initiative aims to leverage machine learning to interpret physical environments and integrate them into a vast, interconnected global dataset, signaling a potential long-term shift away from traditional game publishing.
