Nintendo to Launch Paid Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete

Nintendo is pivoting its mobile strategy for the Animal Crossing franchise, transitioning from the free-to-play model of Pocket Camp to a new, paid version titled Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete. The new title is set to arrive on December 3, shortly after the original app officially ceases operations on November 28.

Nintendo tries again on mobile with a $10 Animal Crossing game arriving in December

This release marks another chapter in Nintendo’s efforts to adapt its major intellectual properties for mobile platforms. While collaborations like Pokémon Go achieved massive success, other mobile ventures involving iconic characters like Mario have seen varying levels of engagement.

Key Changes and Gameplay Shifts

Unlike its predecessor, Pocket Camp Complete will function as a fully offline experience, removing the requirement for a constant internet connection. However, this shift comes with trade-offs regarding social features. Because the game no longer relies on a server-side connection, players will lose the ability to interact with friends in real-time, meaning the Market Box for buying and selling items will be unavailable.

Nintendo has detailed several new additions for the paid version:

  • Whistle Pass: A new mountain location for social gatherings, featuring nightly performances by K.K. Slider at 7 p.m.
  • Camper Cards: Customizable profile cards that can be exchanged with other players via QR codes.
  • Expanded Interaction: Players can now explore the island alongside their favorite villagers.

Transitioning from Free-to-Play

The move to a paid model also includes a total overhaul of the game’s economy. Nintendo is eliminating the “Leaf Tickets” premium currency and the monthly subscription service, Pocket Camp Club. These will be replaced by “Leaf Tokens,” which can be earned through gameplay tasks or by exchanging Bells.

Existing players can transfer their save data to the new version, including their current level, items, and Bells. However, Leaf Tickets will not carry over, and Nintendo advises players to spend them before the original service closes.

Pricing and Availability

Nintendo has implemented a tiered pricing strategy for the new app. Early adopters can purchase the game for $10 until January 31, 2025. Following this promotional window, the price is scheduled to increase to $20. Pre-orders are currently open on both the Google Play Store and the App Store.

Despite the change in pricing, the game retains many familiar mechanics from the 2017 original, which famously reached 15 million downloads within its first six days of release. Popular features from the previous subscription model—such as the “Happy Helper,” “Merry Memories,” and “Furniture & Fashion” tools—will be integrated directly into the Complete experience.
