NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Launches Live Twitch Series
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is modernizing the concept of the fireside chat, bringing his administration directly to the digital platforms where younger constituents spend their time. The mayor officially kicked off his recurring livestream series, titled “Talk with the People,” on Thursday, May 21, at 4:10 p.m. ET.
The debut broadcast attracted an audience of over 10,000 viewers, who engaged with the mayor through real-time chat. During the session, Mamdani received assistance from influencer Moose, who helped him navigate the platform’s unique culture, including the standard practice of addressing the audience collectively as “chat.”

A Shift in Political Communication
While the stream featured casual moments—such as debates over the city’s best tacos and hopes for a Knicks victory—the platform was also used to address substantive policy issues. Mamdani discussed his proposals for increasing taxes on the wealthy and his initiative to improve public bus efficiency, with a goal of reducing route times by six minutes.
The move to Twitch is part of a broader strategy to reach citizens who increasingly look to streamers and online creators for information rather than traditional media outlets. By simulcasting the event across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky, the administration is prioritizing cross-platform accessibility.
Building on a Digital Foundation
Mamdani’s comfort with social media is well-documented from his tenure as a New York State Assembly member representing Astoria. During that time, he gained significant traction by producing viral content that simplified complex topics like housing and transit policy.
Regarding the new initiative, Mamdani stated to Polygon: “By launching the country’s first recurring cross-platform stream hosted by an elected official, where I’ll answer New Yorkers’ questions live on Twitch, we’re opening up a direct line of conversation between our government and the people, especially younger generations who’ve been ignored for too long.”
The deliberate reference to FDR’s radio broadcasts in his promotional Instagram teaser signals a clear intent: to use the dominant communication technology of the current era to shrink the perceived distance between the government and the public. With over 15 million combined followers across his social channels, Mamdani continues to leverage his digital-first approach to redefine urban political engagement.
