NYT Games Redesigns App to Simplify Navigation and Discovery

The NYT Games app has launched a comprehensive redesign, marking a significant shift from its crossword-centric roots toward a more cohesive gaming hub. The update introduces a modernized interface, simplified navigation, and enhanced tracking features designed to accommodate the publication’s expanding library of titles.

NYT Games debuts redesigned app to boost discovery and simplify navigation

This visual overhaul arrives nearly one year after the company rebranded the platform from “NYT Crosswords” to “NYT Games.” According to product design director Jennifer Scheerer, the previous architecture failed to reflect the diverse range of games now offered, necessitating a fundamental change to support future growth.

Improving Discovery and User Experience

The redesign prioritizes a more inviting and functional aesthetic. By utilizing clear brand icons and refined typography, the design team aims to help users navigate the app with greater ease. Principal product designer Lian Chang explained that the update targets two distinct user groups:

  • New Players: The use of vibrant colors and intuitive layouts is intended to showcase the breadth of the available gaming catalog.
  • Returning Players: The interface now offers enhanced functionality, including game cards that provide immediate visibility into ongoing progress.

These game cards are central to the new experience. Once a user begins a puzzle, the card updates to reflect their current status, serving as a functional tool to encourage players to return and complete unfinished sessions.

Streamlined Navigation

The development team focused heavily on simplifying the user journey. The app’s navigation has been reduced from five tabs to three: “Games,” “Stats,” and “Leaderboard.” This decision followed extensive testing to determine the most efficient configuration for the homepage.

“What we had before was crossword-focused and all the other games were sort of in a horizontal scroll,” Scheerer noted. By centralizing archives, game packs, and the full library, the team has removed the friction that previously hid certain titles from casual discovery.

Personalized Touches

To foster a more welcoming environment, the app now features personalized greetings that adapt based on the time of day. Whether a user accesses the app during a morning routine or an evening wind-down, the interface responds accordingly.

Looking ahead, Scheerer and Chang indicated that this redesign serves as a foundational step. The team plans to continue iterating on the platform, incorporating user feedback as they expand the capabilities of the NYT Games hub.
