OpenAI Buys Talk Show TBPN in First Media Acquisition
OpenAI has officially moved into the media landscape by acquiring TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a popular digital talk show that has become a staple for Silicon Valley insiders. This deal marks the first time the artificial intelligence giant has brought a media organization under its corporate umbrella.

The program, which commands a daily three-hour live broadcast on YouTube and X, is helmed by former tech founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays. Known for its candid, high-level discussions on defense, business, and AI, the show has functioned as a “Sports Center” for the tech industry. It regularly hosts high-profile figures such as Sam Altman, Satya Nadella, Mark Zuckerberg, and Marc Benioff.
Integrating Into OpenAI’s Strategy
Following the acquisition, TBPN will maintain its own brand identity while operating under the guidance of OpenAI’s strategy department. The show will report directly to Chris Lehane, the company’s chief political operative. Lehane, known for his background in high-stakes political maneuvering, joined OpenAI in 2024 and has been instrumental in shaping the company’s influence in Washington, including policy advocacy regarding data center regulations.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of AGI deployment, indicated that the company intends to leverage the founders’ marketing and communications expertise beyond the scope of the show. According to Simo, the partnership is designed to explain the broad impacts of AI to the general public, noting that the “standard communications playbook” is insufficient for a company of OpenAI’s unique profile.
Independence and Financial Growth
Despite the change in ownership, OpenAI has stated that TBPN will retain editorial independence. The hosts will continue to manage their own programming, guest selections, and editorial viewpoints.
- Financial Performance: TBPN has scaled significantly, with reports from The Wall Street Journal suggesting the show is on pace to generate over $30 million in revenue this year.
- Leadership Vision: Jordi Hays stated that the move allows the team to shift from mere commentary to creating “real impact” regarding how AI is distributed and understood on a global scale.
- Company Stance: Sam Altman, who has publicly described TBPN as his favorite tech show, emphasized in a social media post that he expects the show to maintain its critical edge, even toward OpenAI.
The acquisition arrives as OpenAI continues to expand its own content footprint, which already includes an internal podcast focused on the company’s development efforts. As the organization edges closer to a potential IPO, its move to control a platform that frequently analyzes its business decisions will likely remain a focal point for industry observers.
