Perplexity Expands Personal Computer AI to All Mac Users

Perplexity has officially expanded access to its Personal Computer tool, making the AI agent available to all Mac users through its latest desktop application. The release marks a shift for the company, moving its digital assistant capabilities from a cloud-exclusive model directly onto the local hardware where users manage their daily tasks.

The software, which was previously restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers via a waitlist, is now accessible to a broader audience. While the application is available for anyone to download, users must maintain a Pro or Max subscription to leverage the full suite of Personal Computer features.

Bridging Local and Cloud Workflows

Personal Computer is built to function as a multi-step digital worker. By integrating with local files, native applications, and web-based tools, it aims to automate complex workflows that previously required manual input. The system utilizes over 400 connectors to orchestrate data across different platforms, all while operating within a secure development environment on the company’s servers.

The company emphasizes several key capabilities for this new release:

  • Cross-App Orchestration: Ability to compare files across different applications or extract notes from one program to draft content in another.
  • Remote Accessibility: Users can run autonomous agents on always-on hardware, such as a Mac Mini, and initiate tasks or approve requests remotely via an iPhone.
  • Web Integration: When paired with Perplexity’s Comet web browser, the system can operate web-based tools without needing specific connectors.

This push into local AI agents comes as the industry grapples with the security implications of autonomous software. While similar tools like OpenClaw have faced scrutiny regarding elevated permissions and potential security vulnerabilities, Perplexity positions its solution as a more controlled and secure environment for AI-enabled computing.

Transitioning Legacy Software

With the launch of this updated desktop experience, Perplexity intends to deprecate its older Mac application in the coming weeks. The company is focusing its development efforts entirely on the Personal Computer app ecosystem.

For now, the software is available exclusively through direct download from the company’s website and is not currently listed on the Mac App Store.
