Reddit Targets AI Bots With New Human Verification Tools

Reddit takes on the bots with new ‘human verification’ requirements for fishy behavior

Reddit is intensifying its battle against automated accounts, introducing a new system that requires suspected bots to verify their human status. The move comes as platforms grapple with the increasing prevalence of AI-driven activity that threatens to overwhelm online discourse.

The company confirmed on Wednesday that it will begin flagging automated accounts that provide services to users, adopting a labeling system similar to the one used for “good bots” on X. Accounts flagged by Reddit’s internal detection tools—which analyze behavioral patterns like posting speed—will be prompted to undergo verification.

Prioritizing Privacy in Verification

Reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman emphasized that the verification process is designed to confirm the presence of a person rather than collect personal identity data. “If we need to verify an account is human, we’ll do it in a privacy-first way,” Huffman stated in the announcement. “Our aim is to confirm there is a person behind the account, not who that person is.”

To achieve this, the platform will utilize several authentication methods:

  • Biometric and Passkey Tools: Integration with services including Google, Apple, YubiKey, and World ID.
  • Government IDs: Used only as a fallback in specific regions, such as the U.K., Australia, and certain U.S. states, to comply with local age-verification mandates.

Huffman noted that while these measures are necessary, they are not intended to be a sitewide requirement. Instead, the focus remains on decentralized and private solutions that avoid the need for identification whenever possible.

The “Dead Internet” Challenge

The platform has become a primary target for bots used to manipulate narratives, drive traffic, and generate content for AI training. With Cloudflare projecting that bot traffic will overtake human traffic by 2027, the “dead internet theory”—the idea that most web interactions are now AI-generated—has moved from a fringe conjecture to a pressing operational reality for major sites.

Reddit is currently averaging 100,000 account removals daily. While the company does not ban the use of AI to generate posts or comments, it is cracking down on accounts that exhibit spam-like behavior or attempt to deceptively influence community discussions.

Developers operating legitimate automated services are encouraged to review labeling guidelines within the r/redditdev community to ensure their accounts remain transparent and compliant with the new platform standards.
