Reddit Tests AI Search Tool to Boost Shopping Experience
Reddit is officially testing a new AI-driven search capability designed to bridge the gap between community discussions and e-commerce. By analyzing organic conversations, the platform aims to provide users with direct access to products that have been highly recommended by its own user base.

Currently, a select group of users in the United States will encounter interactive product carousels when performing searches on the platform. These carousels appear for specific queries—such as looking for “best noise-canceling headphones” or potential gift ideas—and aggregate items frequently mentioned across various threads and comments.
How the AI Shopping Tool Works
The feature streamlines the discovery process by displaying product images, current pricing, and direct purchasing links alongside community insights. When a user interacts with a specific product in the carousel, they are provided with further details before being directed to the retailer’s website to complete the transaction.
In a blog post regarding the rollout, the company stated that the goal is to simplify navigation while ensuring that authentic community perspectives remain the focal point. Reddit plans to refine this experience based on user feedback and behavior throughout the testing phase.
Strategic Shift Toward E-commerce
This integration marks a significant step in Reddit’s efforts to monetize its vast repository of human-generated advice. The strategy follows the introduction of Dynamic Product Ads (DPA) last year, which offered personalized recommendations based on individual user interests.
During the company’s most recent earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman highlighted AI search as a critical growth engine for the business. The platform has seen substantial engagement metrics to support this pivot:
- Weekly active users for search grew by 30% year-over-year, climbing from 60 million to 80 million.
- Usage of the AI-powered “Reddit Answers” feature surged from 1 million in Q1 2025 to 15 million by Q4.
As Reddit moves into this space, it joins other major tech entities experimenting with AI-driven retail. OpenAI, for instance, introduced an “Instant Checkout” feature last September, allowing users to purchase items from Shopify and Etsy directly within conversational interfaces. For Reddit, the move represents a long-term play to transform its community-driven insights into a consistent revenue stream.
