Ribbie Transforms MLB Stats Into Retro Pixel-Art Games

For fans tired of the static, text-heavy interfaces of standard sports trackers, a new web project called Ribbie is rethinking how we consume baseball data. The site converts real-time Major League Baseball (MLB) statistics into an 8-bit, arcade-inspired broadcast, turning routine play-by-play updates into a living pixel-art world.

Eric Brownrout, the developer behind the project, found existing tools like ESPN’s Gamecast uninspiring. The inspiration struck after he created a pixel-art image of Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber for a fantasy league logo. “I love the aesthetic, and started thinking about ways I might be able to apply it to a data or visualization tool,” Brownrout explained. “A quick Google search revealed the MLB public StatsAPI, and I realized I could theoretically recreate an entire baseball game in the same pixel format.”

Leveraging AI for Development

Brownrout accelerated the development of Ribbie by utilizing modern coding tools. He noted that while the project might have taken months under traditional workflows, he built and launched it in just a few weekends by using Claude Code and Codex.

  • Image Generation: Codex handled the sprite and image-generation pipelines.
  • Development: Claude Code assisted with the core web application structure.
  • Expansion: The platform now supports fantasy baseball, allowing users to track their specific rosters.

Legal Standing and Future Plans

Regarding potential copyright concerns from the MLB, Brownrout remains confident. He points to a 2007 legal case establishing that baseball statistics are considered facts and are not subject to copyright. Because Ribbie is a free, non-commercial fan project using the same public API as fantasy sports sites, he views it as a “love letter” to the sport rather than a competitor to official broadcasting services.

Looking ahead, the developer is focusing on immersive features. He is currently recording custom audio tracks, including play-by-play sound effects, to enhance the experience for fans who want to follow games passively in the background.
