Roblox Offers 25% More Robux via Web to Bypass App Store Fees

Roblox is shifting its monetization strategy by incentivizing players to purchase its virtual currency, Robux, directly through its website. Customers who choose to buy via the web, computer, or through gift cards will now receive 25% more currency compared to transactions made through mobile app stores.

Roblox will now give users 25% more of its in-game currency if you buy Robux on its website

This adjustment serves as a direct workaround to the commission markups imposed by Apple and Google on in-app purchases. By moving transactions outside of these platforms, the company aims to optimize value for its user and creator ecosystems while balancing operational costs.

A Long-Term Strategic Change

Unlike seasonal promotions, the company has clarified that this is a permanent structural update. A spokesperson for Roblox confirmed the initiative, stating: “Apple and Google are valued partners. We are always looking for ways to pass on more value to our user and creator community while managing costs. Going forward, we are providing up to +25% more Robux for any customer that purchases Robux through the web, computer, or with gift cards.”

The details of this policy were further outlined in a post on the official Roblox developer forum, confirming the change is intended for the long term.

Industry Impact and Epic Games’ Stance

The move has drawn attention from industry leaders currently embroiled in legal and regulatory battles regarding mobile platform fees. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, a vocal critic of current app store billing practices, publicly supported the decision.

In a post on X, Sweeney remarked: “Awesome to see Roblox finally fighting the Apple tax. I hope that the current Epic v Apple contempt of court proceeding stops Apple’s ludicrous scare screens and junk fees so that all apps can send users to web-based payments and pass on the savings like this.”

The broader landscape for digital payments is evolving rapidly:

  • Regulatory Pressure: Legislation such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in Europe is enabling the rise of alternative app stores.
  • Platform Expansion: Epic Games launched its own store on iOS in the EU and globally on Android this past August.
  • Alternative Solutions: Emerging startups like Appcharge are actively developing infrastructure to help game publishers facilitate direct-to-consumer sales, bypassing traditional mobile ecosystem constraints.
