Roku’s Howdy Hits 1M Subscribers With $3 Streaming Model
Roku has reached a significant milestone with its low-cost streaming venture, Howdy. According to recent market analysis from Antenna, the service has officially surpassed 1 million subscribers, signaling a successful entry into the highly competitive paid streaming market.
Since its debut in August 2025, Howdy has distinguished itself by offering an ad-free experience at the price point of $2.99 per month. The platform’s growth strategy has relied on a mix of accessibility and a content library spanning approximately 10,000 hours, featuring titles such as “The Blind Side,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “Weeds” through partnerships with studios like Warner Bros. Discovery and Lionsgate.

Growth and Retention Metrics
The platform’s expansion was bolstered by its availability beyond the standard Roku interface, including a standalone mobile application and an integration with Amazon Prime Video. Antenna’s data highlights the following performance trends:
- Initial Adoption: Approximately 300,000 subscribers joined in the first month.
- Consistent Growth: The service has maintained a pace of at least 100,000 new subscribers monthly since its launch.
- Retention Success: Among users who joined in August and September 2025, 51% remained subscribed after six months.
Howdy’s retention rate of 51% notably outperforms the industry average for both premium SVOD services, which sits at 47%, and specialty platforms like Crunchyroll or AMC+, which average 38%.
Market Positioning
While the service has yet to reach the scale of major industry incumbents like Netflix or Disney+, Roku has positioned Howdy as a complementary, low-cost option rather than a direct competitor to high-budget streaming giants. By focusing on a lean, ad-free model, the company aims to capture viewers who are increasingly sensitive to rising subscription costs across the broader digital media landscape.
