Roto VR Explorer: New $799 Chair Built for Meta Quest

London-based hardware company Roto VR has unveiled its latest solution to the persistent challenge of locomotion in virtual reality: the Roto VR Explorer. Priced at $799, the motorized gaming chair is the first of its kind to receive the official “Made for Meta” seal of approval.

For years, the VR industry has experimented with various peripherals—such as omnidirectional treadmills and specialized footboards—to help users navigate digital spaces. However, these devices have often faced hurdles regarding prohibitive costs, physical footprint, and the broader challenge of mainstream headset adoption.

Addressing Motion Sickness and Immersion

Beyond simple rotation, the Roto VR Explorer is engineered to mitigate virtual reality motion sickness. By synchronizing the physical movement of the chair with the visuals displayed inside the headset, the system aims to resolve the disconnect between the user’s brain and body that typically triggers nausea.

The chair features a distinct design, characterized by:

  • A tiered back support for comfort during extended sessions.
  • A wide, compass-like base where the footrest functions as the directional indicator.
  • Integrated haptic feedback to heighten the sense of physical presence in the game.

Availability and Compatibility

The system is compatible with approximately 400 titles, with Roto planning to offer a range of modular accessories to further customize the setup. Founded in 2015 by tech entrepreneur Elliott Myers, the company has spent nearly a decade developing its vision for immersive hardware.

Interested consumers can place preorders for the Roto VR Explorer starting today. The company anticipates that initial units will begin shipping in October 2024.
