Sarvam Targets Feature Phones and Cars with Edge AI Models
Sarvam is pivoting toward consumer technology, announcing plans to integrate its proprietary AI models into hardware ranging from Nokia and HMD feature phones to automobiles and wearable devices. The Indian startup, backed by investors including Peak XV, Lightspeed, and Khosla Ventures, unveiled the strategy at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
The company’s approach centers on “edge models”—lightweight AI architectures that occupy only a few megabytes of storage. These models are designed to operate on existing mobile processors and, in many cases, function entirely offline. This shift marks a notable transition for Sarvam, which previously focused on enterprise-level voice AI applications, such as customer support tools.
Strategic Partnerships for Hardware Integration
To facilitate this rollout, Sarvam is collaborating with several industry heavyweights:
- HMD: The two companies are developing a conversational AI assistant for Nokia and HMD handsets. A demonstration showed users accessing local language assistance for government schemes and market information via a dedicated button on a feature phone.
- Qualcomm: Sarvam has worked with the chipmaker to optimize its models for specific chipsets. Qualcomm is concurrently developing a “Sovereign AI Experience Suite” intended to span phones, PCs, and IoT devices.
- Bosch: The startup is partnering with the German engineering firm to embed AI assistant capabilities within automotive systems.
“Through edge AI, we want to bring intelligence to every phone, laptop, car, and even a new generation of devices,” said Tushar Goswamy, head of Edge AI at Sarvam.
Vivek Raghavan, co-founder of Sarvam, noted that the collaboration with Qualcomm is key to moving “sovereign AI from research to deployment.” He added that the initiative enables the firm to build applications that process data closer to the device, enhancing data privacy and scalability.
Expanding into Wearables
Beyond mobile and automotive integration, Sarvam is venturing into hardware production. The company teased its own AI-powered smart glasses, branded as “Sarvam Kaze.” Co-founder Pratyush Kumar described the glasses as a “builders’ device” and confirmed a scheduled release for May.
