Scott Rogowsky returns to live gaming with Savvy app

Scott Rogowsky is stepping back into the spotlight with the launch of his own mobile gaming platform, Savvy. The comedian, who became a cultural phenomenon as the face of the viral hit HQ Trivia, is returning to the live game show format with a new daily challenge called TextSavvy.

Unlike his previous venture, the new app shifts the focus from traditional trivia to word-based puzzles. In TextSavvy, players compete directly against Rogowsky, creating an interactive experience that blends the mechanics of games like Wordle and Connections with a live broadcast element.

Learning from the past

The rise and fall of HQ Trivia, which saw millions of daily users between 2017 and 2019, left a lasting impact on Rogowsky. The app ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2020 following internal leadership conflicts, the death of co-founder Colin Kroll, and a lack of a sustainable business model despite a $100 million valuation.

For Rogowsky, the new venture is a chance to build something on his own terms. He is currently self-funding Savvy, opting to avoid the high-pressure environment of venture capital that he believes contributed to the collapse of his previous project.

  • Focus on Sustainability: Rogowsky is prioritizing steady profitability over rapid, high-stakes expansion.
  • Direct Interaction: The game design, developed with European designer Johan de Jager, allows for a two-way flow where the host participates alongside the audience.
  • Current Status: TextSavvy is currently in “Season 0,” a soft-launch phase designed to refine technical performance before the official debut on March 1.

A new chapter

After a period of career uncertainty that included a canceled show at MLB Network and a stint running a vintage store, Rogowsky credits a transformative personal retreat for giving him the clarity to return to entertainment. He describes Savvy as a “low-budget” operation where he maintains full control, ensuring that the focus remains on the audience experience rather than corporate drama.

While the current prize pools are more modest than those of the peak HQ Trivia era, Rogowsky remains optimistic about the platform’s future. During a recent TextSavvy broadcast, he emphasized that he is driven by the joy of connecting with his core fanbase. With nearly 4,000 viewers already tuning in during the soft launch, Rogowsky is confident that he has found his rhythm once again.
