Snap Launches AR Spectacles for Developers at $99 Monthly
Snap has officially unveiled its latest iteration of Spectacles, positioning the augmented reality glasses as a specialized tool for developers. The company is adopting a hardware-as-a-service model, offering the device through a subscription that costs $99 per month with a mandatory one-year commitment, totaling approximately $1,200 before taxes.
The device occupies a distinct physical footprint, designed to bridge the gap between bulky extended reality (XR) headsets and traditional smart glasses. Despite their substantial size, they weigh only half a pound, significantly lighter than competing hardware like the 1.4-pound Vision Pro.
Technical Specifications and Performance
Under the hood, the Spectacles are powered by dual Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, with one chip housed in each temple. The system utilizes Snap’s proprietary Spatial Engine to track the user’s environment. While the field of view remains limited at 46 degrees, Snap notes this is nearly triple the size of the previous Spectacles 4, marking a significant advancement in their AR development.
SnapOS and Developer Ecosystem
To support the new hardware, Snap is introducing SnapOS. Built on the Android kernel, the operating system is designed to streamline the development process for the platform. Developers interested in the hardware must apply through the Lens Studio program. Once accepted, they receive access to the Spectacles and ongoing support from the Snap Lab team.
The launch features several high-profile content partners to populate the ecosystem:
- ILM Immersive: Developing a “Star Wars” title for the platform.
- Niantic: Bringing titles such as “Peridot” and “Scaniverse.”
- Lego: Creating interactive experiences for the glasses.
In addition to the hardware, Snap is rolling out new AI-driven video generation tools for creators and updating its My AI chatbot with features reminiscent of Google Lens. The company is also testing a simplified version of its main application to enhance overall usability.
