Snap Loses Top Specs Executive Ahead of AR Glasses Launch
Snap is facing a significant leadership change as it prepares to release the latest iteration of its augmented reality glasses. Scott Myers, who served as the Senior Vice President of the company’s Specs division, has stepped down from his position at a critical juncture for the hardware project.
The departure follows reports of internal friction regarding the company’s hardware direction. While initial accounts from Sources suggested the exit was triggered by a conflict with CEO Evan Spiegel, the company has offered a different perspective on the matter.
Leadership Transition and Strategy
A spokesperson for Snap confirmed that Myers decided to leave the organization, stating, “We can’t wait to bring Specs to the world later this year. We remain focused on disciplined execution and long-term value creation for our developer partners, community and shareholders.”
While the company acknowledged Myers’ contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors, it disputed the characterization of a “blow-up” between the executive and Spiegel. When pressed for further details regarding the nature of the disagreement, reports indicated the friction centered on strategy, though specifics remain undisclosed.
The Road to the Specs Launch
The timing of this resignation is notable, as Snap has been aggressively positioning itself for the upcoming commercial debut of its AR hardware. In January, the company took a major step toward this goal by reorganizing the hardware division into a separate subsidiary, Specs Inc. At the time, leadership noted that this structure would provide “greater operational focus and alignment.”
Myers, who joined Snap in 2020, brought extensive industry experience to the role, having previously worked at Apple, Nokia, and SpaceX, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Hardware Challenges
During his tenure, Myers was vocal about the technical hurdles inherent in developing wearable AR technology. In an interview last summer, he described the development of the glasses as an “entirely new paradigm.” He emphasized the difficulty of balancing aesthetics with functionality, famously noting, “I don’t want to see people wearing a wire coming out of the back of their head.”
With the commercial release expected later this year, the company now moves forward without one of its most senior hardware architects, leaving observers to monitor how the transition will impact the final stages of the Specs rollout.
