Sony to End Physical PlayStation Game Discs by 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment is set to phase out physical discs for all new PlayStation titles beginning in January 2028. The company confirmed this week that future game releases will transition exclusively to digital distribution via the PlayStation Store and authorized online retailers, marking a definitive end to the era of physical media for its consoles.

While games launched prior to the 2028 deadline will remain available on physical media, the shift signals a broader industry move toward digital-only ecosystems. Sony stated that this strategy aligns with current consumer behavior, noting that the overwhelming majority of players have already abandoned physical discs in favor of digital downloads.
The Shift Toward Digital Dominance
Financial data from the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025 highlights the rapid decline of physical media. According to Sony’s latest financial report, digital downloads now represent 85% of full-game software sales for both PS4 and PS5. Physical copies have dwindled to just 15% of the total market share.
In its official announcement, the company explained the rationale behind the decision:
- Adapting to evolving consumer trends where digital media preference significantly outpaces physical formats.
- Aligning business operations with how the PlayStation community currently accesses and plays games.
Impact on Retail and Legacy Systems
The move toward digital-only gaming has already impacted the retail landscape. Brick-and-mortar retailers that historically relied on disc sales have faced significant contraction, with GameStop closing over 1,300 locations during the last two fiscal years.
Despite the industry trend, the transition remains a point of contention for many collectors. Recent backlash surrounding the release of Grand Theft Auto 6—which opted to include a download code rather than a physical disc in its collector’s box—underscores the friction between corporate strategy and consumer desire for tangible ownership.
Additionally, Sony is further streamlining its digital footprint by shutting down the PlayStation Store for legacy hardware. This process begins in select markets for the PlayStation 3 later this year, with a global shutdown of the PS3 and PlayStation Vita storefronts scheduled for next year. While new purchases will be disabled, Sony confirmed that users will retain the ability to download previously purchased content for the time being.
