SpaceX Eyes $119B Texas Facility for Terafab Chip Project
SpaceX is evaluating plans for a massive semiconductor and advanced computing facility in Grimes County, Texas. According to a formal proposal, the project—internally referred to as “Terafab”—could eventually see an investment reaching $119 billion, with an initial phase estimated at $55 billion.

The filing describes the site as a “multi-phase, next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing fabrication facility.” Elon Musk’s objective is to secure a reliable supply chain for the hardware necessary to power his various ventures, including xAI, Tesla, and SpaceX.
Strategic Goals for Terafab
The project is designed to address a critical bottleneck identified by Musk: the current pace of chip production is failing to meet the aggressive requirements of his artificial intelligence and robotics initiatives. By collaborating with industry giant Intel, Musk aims to manufacture specialized chips for:
- AI servers and xAI’s Grok model training;
- Autonomous navigation for Tesla vehicles and robotics;
- Advanced satellite operations;
- Future data centers located in space.
Musk has emphasized the necessity of this vertical integration, stating, “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.” The long-term ambition for the site is to produce enough capacity to provide 1 terawatt of power per year.
Location and Corporate Outlook
While the proposal submitted to Grimes County highlights Texas as a potential hub, Musk clarified via social media that the region is one of several locations currently under consideration for the factory.
The manufacturing push aligns with Musk’s broader strategy to integrate xAI’s computing needs more closely with SpaceX. As the billionaire works to scale the infrastructure for his Grok AI series, the combined entity—reportedly valued at $1.25 trillion—is anticipated to move toward a public offering this June.
