Spotify Adds Group Chats for Podcast and Music Sharing

Spotify is deepening its social footprint by launching a group chat feature, enabling users to share audio content directly within the application. The update allows listeners to discuss and send podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks to groups of up to 10 people simultaneously.

Connecting Through Audio

The company announced the rollout this week, marking a significant step following the initial introduction of private messaging last August. To maintain user privacy and relevance, the platform has implemented specific requirements for starting these conversations:

• Group chats can only be initiated with individuals with whom the user has previously shared content.
• Eligible connections include participants in collaborative playlists.
• Users who have engaged in Jam or Blend sessions can also start group conversations.

A Social Strategy

This expansion aligns with Spotify’s long-term strategy to transform its streaming app into a more interactive social ecosystem. Over recent years, the platform has steadily integrated community-focused tools, such as podcast comments and features that let users track the listening habits of friends and followers.

Despite these internal updates, Spotify maintains that its messaging tools are intended to complement, rather than replace, external communication platforms where users typically share content. Regarding data security, the company confirmed that while messages are encrypted both at rest and in transit, they do not currently feature end-to-end encryption.
