Spotify Launches ‘About the Song’ to Reveal Music Stories
Spotify is expanding its mobile experience with the introduction of “About the Song,” a new feature designed to provide listeners with deeper context regarding the music they stream. The tool, announced on Friday, serves as a direct point of differentiation against competitors like Apple Music.
How the Feature Works
Accessed via the “Now Playing” screen, users can scroll down to find an “About the Song” card on supported tracks. The interface features short, swipeable summaries curated from third-party sources, detailing the inspiration and history behind specific songs. Users have the ability to interact with these cards by providing a thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating.
“We believe that understanding the craft and context behind a song can deepen your connection to the music you love,” the company stated in a blog post.
Availability and Regional Rollout
The feature is currently in beta for premium subscribers using the mobile app in the following regions:

A Week of Rapid Updates
This release follows a series of significant updates to the Spotify platform. Earlier this week, the company announced that users in the U.S. and U.K. will soon be able to purchase physical books directly through the app. Additional audiobook enhancements include “Page Match,” which synchronizes physical reading with digital audio, and new “Audiobook Recaps.”
Furthermore, Spotify has expanded its lyrics functionality, making translations available globally and enabling offline lyrics viewing for all users. The company also shifted the display position for lyrics, now placing them directly beneath the album artwork or looping canvas videos. Simultaneously, developers have been notified of a revamp to the Developer Mode APIs, which now mandates a premium account and imposes stricter limits on API endpoints and test user counts.
