Threads Hits 500M Monthly Users With New Feed Controls
Threads has officially surpassed the 500 million monthly active user milestone. The Meta-owned platform announced the achievement on Tuesday, marking a significant growth trajectory by adding 100 million users in just the last 10 months, following its 400 million user report in August 2025.
To coincide with this growth, the platform is rolling out a suite of personalization features, most notably a tool called “Your Algo.” This feature allows users to exert direct, private control over their feeds, choosing which topics they want to see more or less of for a set duration of one, three, or seven days.

Refining the Feed Experience
“Your Algo” serves as a private evolution of the earlier “Dear Algo” tool, which required users to post public requests to influence their feed. The new update is currently available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. By providing these granular controls, Threads is positioning itself to offer a level of feed customization not currently available on rival platforms like X.
Expanding Communities and Real-Time Interaction
Beyond feed personalization, Threads is graduating its “Communities” feature out of beta. Users can now navigate to a new “Communities Hub” to discover groups focused on specific interests, such as literature, K-pop, or sports. To improve visibility, these groups now feature distinct icons.

Connor Hayes, head of Threads, emphasized that the Discovery Hub is designed to help users find their niche more efficiently. “We noticed that when folks use the app with a clear purpose and they find their people in the app quickly, it’s just a better experience for them,” Hayes explained.
The platform is also scaling its “Live Chats” feature, which allows for real-time discussion during major events. Key updates to this feature include:
- Ability to co-host chats.
- Capability to quote moments directly to your feed.
- Full rollout to all communities by July.
Hayes noted that users often value the “quietness” of Threads compared to other video-centric, high-decibel social platforms. Live Chats function as a “second screen” companion, allowing for structured commentary during live broadcasts. This move is part of a broader strategy to challenge X’s long-standing dominance as the primary destination for real-time news and event coverage.
