Threads Tests DM Shortcut to Simplify Private Chats

Threads is rolling out a new feature that simplifies how users initiate private conversations. The Meta-owned platform announced on Thursday that it is testing a shortcut to trigger direct messages (DMs) without requiring users to navigate to a specific profile page.

Participants in this test can type phrases like “DM me” or “Message me” within a post or a reply. The platform automatically converts these phrases into a hyperlink, which acts as a direct gateway for others to open a private chat window with the author.

How the Message Routing Works

The functionality relies on existing relationship statuses to manage incoming traffic:

• Mutual followers: Messages land directly in the primary inbox.
• Non-mutual connections: Messages are routed to the “Message Requests” folder, serving as a safeguard against spam.

Expanding Messaging Capabilities

This update is currently limited to select users in the U.S. and Canada. While Meta has not confirmed a global rollout timeline, the move signals a broader effort to prioritize messaging as a core component of the Threads experience. By reducing the number of steps required to connect, the company aims to foster higher engagement levels.

This integration follows a string of updates designed to enhance interaction, including AI-driven feed personalization, the ability to cross-post directly to Instagram Stories, and reports of potential in-message gaming features.

The platform’s focus on messaging comes during a period of sustained growth for the mobile app. According to data from Similarweb, Threads has overtaken X in daily mobile active users. As of January 7, 2026, Threads recorded 141.5 million daily mobile users, compared to 125 million for X.
