TikTok Launches Campus Hub for Student Group Chats

TikTok is expanding its focus on university life with the introduction of a dedicated “Campus Hub.” The feature aims to foster tighter-knit online communities by providing verified students with specific spaces for interaction and tailored content streams.

The update serves as an evolution of the platform’s existing campus verification system, which debuted last August. By leveraging a partnership with the student verification service UNiDAYS, the app confirms enrollment status across more than 6,000 universities. Once verified, users gain entry to the new hub and its associated tools.

New Communication and Content Tools

The hub introduces two primary features designed to keep students connected:

  • Exclusive Group Chats: Verified students can create or participate in group conversations with up to 300 classmates from the same institution.
  • University-Specific Feeds: A personalized feed aggregates content from verified peers and updates relevant to the user’s specific university.

While the company suggests these tools are ideal for maintaining ties during the summer break, the strategic move also positions TikTok to compete with platforms like Discord, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram. By capturing everyday academic and social discourse, TikTok is attempting to integrate itself deeper into the daily routines of the college demographic.

This strategy mirrors the early operational model of Facebook, which famously required a “.edu” email address to build a gated environment for university students. TikTok’s push also follows a similar move by Instagram, which introduced its own campus verification features for U.S. students last year, signaling a broader industry race to capture the collegiate social media market.
