The company first experimented with this location-based functionality back in 2022, when it initiated a test phase for select users across Southeast Asia. Now, the feature is moving into a broader deployment, appearing directly on the app’s home screen. Interestingly, the tab does not carry a generic “Nearby” label; instead, it displays the name of the specific location the user is currently in.

How the Feed Functions

According to TikTok’s official announcement, the content displayed in this feed is curated based on three primary factors:

• The user’s current geographic location.
• The specific topic or category of the video content.
• The recency of the post.

The feature is intended to support local economies by boosting the visibility of small businesses, cultural institutions, and regional creators. Data provided by the company highlights the potential impact, noting that 46% of TikTok users in the U.K. have visited a physical shop, restaurant, or attraction after discovering it on the platform.

Privacy and User Controls

TikTok has implemented strict parameters regarding who can participate in this location-based ecosystem. Key privacy considerations include:

• Age Restrictions: The Nearby Feed is strictly limited to users aged 18 and older.
• Privacy Settings: Content will not appear in the feed if an account is set to private, or if an individual video is restricted to “Friends” or “Only You.”
• Location Sharing: Enabling GPS tracking is optional. When active, iOS users will see a visible system indicator whenever the application accesses their location data.
