Trump Announces TikTok Deal Approval After Xi Jinping Talks

President Trump announced on Friday that a breakthrough has been reached regarding the future of TikTok in the United States. Following discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the administration secured an agreement that paves the way for the video-sharing platform to remain operational under a new ownership model involving American investors.

The resolution follows a period of intense uncertainty for the app, which faced a federal ban in January due to national security concerns. While the initial prohibition was repeatedly delayed by the White House following significant pushback from the platform’s creator community and user base, this new arrangement aims to permanently resolve the standoff.

The New Ownership Structure

According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, the deal shifts the majority control of TikTok’s U.S. operations to domestic entities. Key components of the transition include:

  • Majority Stake: A consortium of U.S. investors, including Oracle, Silver Lake, and Andreessen Horowitz, is set to acquire an 80% stake in the U.S. entity.
  • Chinese Participation: Existing Chinese shareholders will retain the remaining 20% interest in the business.
  • Governance: The board of the new company will be primarily composed of U.S. representatives, with a specific seat reserved for an appointee selected by the U.S. government.

Official Statements

The breakthrough was confirmed on the Truth Social platform, where Trump described his conversation with the Chinese leader as a “very good one.” The President indicated that further discussions are planned to finalize the transition.

In a formal statement released by ByteDance, the company acknowledged the diplomatic efforts required to reach this stage. “We thank President Xi Jinping and President Donald J. Trump for their efforts to preserve TikTok in the United States,” the spokesperson noted, adding that the firm intends to operate in full compliance with local laws to keep the service accessible to American users through the new TikTok U.S. entity.

While the broad strokes of the agreement are now public, officials have yet to disclose the finer technical or operational details regarding how the transition will be executed in the coming weeks.
