Twelve South Launches First USB-C Charger with Apple Find My
Twelve South has debuted a new iteration of its PlugBug wall adapter, distinguishing itself as the first USB-C charger to integrate Apple’s Find My tracking technology. Designed for users prone to leaving power accessories behind in airports or hotels, the device aims to solve the persistent issue of misplaced charging gear.
How the Tracking Integration Works
The device operates similarly to an AirTag, appearing directly within the Apple Find My app. Users can trigger an onboard speaker to emit a sound, making it easier to locate the charger under furniture or inside luggage. The system also supports separation alerts, notifying the user if the charger is left behind.
Because electrical safety regulations require the tracking hardware to remain isolated from the high-voltage charging components, the Find My functionality is powered by a separate, replaceable button battery. According to Twelve South, this battery is identical to the one used in an AirTag and provides approximately one year of life before requiring a replacement.
Pricing and Hardware Specifications
The integration of tracking technology does impact the physical footprint of the adapter, as the device must house both the battery and the tracking module. Twelve South offers several configurations for the new PlugBug:
- PlugBug 50: A 50-watt, two-port model priced at $70.
- PlugBug 120: A 120-watt, four-port model priced at $120.
- Travel Variants: International adapter kits are available as an add-on for an additional $10.
While Twelve South markets the accessory as a slim profile solution, the inclusion of the battery compartment on the rear of the unit creates a distinct form factor compared to standard, non-tracking chargers. The setup process is straightforward: users simply remove a battery tab, press a button on the device, and pair it with their Apple device via the Find My app.
