WhatsApp Launches Prepaid Mobile Recharges in India

WhatsApp is expanding its financial utility in India by introducing prepaid mobile recharge services directly within the messaging platform. The feature, developed in partnership with fintech company PayU, allows users to top up mobile accounts for major carriers such as Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea.

According to PayU, the new functionality will roll out to the entirety of WhatsApp’s Indian user base over the next two weeks. Ravi Garg, director of business messaging at Meta India, stated that the update is designed to simplify daily transactions and increase the app’s overall utility for consumers.

Market Challenges and Growth

Despite boasting a user base exceeding 500 million people in India, WhatsApp has struggled to establish itself as a primary payment gateway. The sector remains dominated by PhonePe and Google Pay, which leverage the government-backed Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Recent data from the National Payments Corporation of India illustrates the competitive gap:

  • WhatsApp: Processed over 130 million transactions in March.
  • PhonePe: Handled more than 10.5 billion transactions in the same period.
  • Google Pay: Processed over 7.5 billion transactions in March.

Broadening App Functionality

The introduction of prepaid recharges is part of a larger strategy by Meta to transform WhatsApp into an all-encompassing service hub. Users in India can already utilize the app for peer-to-peer transfers, metro ticket bookings, and various government service interfaces.

Since the lifting of onboarding restrictions by the NPCI in late 2024, WhatsApp has seen a notable increase in payment activity. UPI transactions on the platform grew from approximately 61 million in January 2025 to current levels, signaling a slow but steady upward trend in adoption as the company attempts to diversify beyond simple messaging.
