CONTEUDO:

London-based creative tech firm Wonder Studios has secured $12 million in seed funding, aiming to scale its production capabilities as the entertainment industry grapples with the integration of generative AI tools. The investment round was spearheaded by Atomico, with continued support from existing backers LocalGlobe and Blackbird.

Wonder Studios, backed by OpenAI, DeepMind execs, raised $12M to bring AI content to Hollywood

The startup, which previously drew pre-seed backing from high-profile executives at Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and ElevenLabs, plans to utilize the capital to double its engineering workforce. Beyond technical expansion, the company is shifting focus toward owning its intellectual property (IP) and developing original content.

Scaling AI Content Production

Wonder Studios has already begun building a portfolio of AI-assisted projects. The team was responsible for the AI-generated music video for Lewis Capaldi’s “Something in the Heavens,” a collaboration involving Universal Music Group, YouTube, and DeepMind. Additionally, the studio launched its own anthology series, “Beyond the Loop.”

Looking ahead to next year, the company is developing several commercial and original works. This includes a documentary project produced in partnership with Campfire Studios—the production house behind Netflix titles such as The Menendez Brothers and America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Ross Dinerstein, CEO of Campfire Studios, is also an investor in the startup.

Navigating the Hollywood AI Debate

The funding arrives during a period of significant tension between Hollywood and the tech sector. Major studios, including Disney and Universal, are currently engaged in legal battles against AI firms like Midjourney and MiniMax, citing concerns over copyright infringement and the unauthorized training of models on existing creative work.

Public sentiment regarding AI in entertainment remains polarized, particularly following criticisms of tools like OpenAI’s Sora 2 for reproducing actors’ likenesses without consent. Despite this, companies like Netflix are actively exploring generative AI to boost storytelling efficiency.

A Platform for Storytellers

Wonder Studios describes its approach as “Hollywood without borders,” positioning its platform as a hub that connects creators with collaborative resources and career opportunities. Justin Hackney, co-founder and chief commercial officer, views the current transition as a pivotal moment for the industry.

“The next decade will define what creativity looks like in the age of AI,” Hackney stated. “Our mission is to ensure that this future belongs to the storytellers. Working with leading studios, industry pioneers, and grassroots filmmakers, we’re already creating a bridge where technology and artistry grow together.”
