X Launches Stand-Alone XChat App for iOS Users

X officially released its XChat application for iOS this past Friday. The move marks a significant shift in corporate strategy, transitioning away from the original vision of a single “everything app” toward a fragmented ecosystem of dedicated services.

The new stand-alone platform allows users to interact with their existing X contacts through several communication channels:

• Direct messaging and group chats
• Audio and video calling capabilities
• File sharing features

Strategic Shift in Product Development

Previously, Elon Musk aimed to consolidate messaging, payments, shopping, and AI tools into one unified interface. By launching XChat as a separate entity, the company is pivoting to a suite of consumer touchpoints. This follows a period of public beta testing conducted earlier this year to refine the user experience based on direct feedback.

The company is also utilizing XChat to host its Communities feature. X recently announced the closure of Communities due to low engagement and high volumes of spam, positioning the new app as the primary destination for those members to migrate.

Privacy and Security Concerns

X claims the app is built with a focus on privacy, featuring tools such as the ability to delete or edit messages for all participants, disappearing message options, and a block on screenshots. The company asserts that the service is free from ads and tracking mechanisms.

Regarding security, X states that all communications are PIN-protected and end-to-end encrypted. However, these claims face scrutiny. Security researchers have previously challenged the validity of the company’s encryption protocols. Experts who previously warned that the service lacked the security standards of platforms like Signal are expected to re-evaluate the new app now that it is widely available.

Despite the current feature set, the company indicates that this is only the initial phase for the platform. Benji Taylor, the lead designer at X, suggested on social media that the current version of the app is “just the beginning of what we’re building for messaging.”
