YouTube Directors Dominate Box Office With Horror Hits

The traditional path to Hollywood is shifting as a new wave of digital creators secures the top two spots at the domestic box office. This weekend, horror features helmed by former YouTube filmmakers are outperforming major studio tentpoles, signaling a significant change in audience loyalty and industry trends.

This weekend’s two biggest movies were both directed by YouTubers

Leading the market is Backrooms, an expansion of Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube series. The film, which depicts a physics-defying, mysterious office space inspired by a 4chan thread, is projected to earn $81 million domestically. This result marks a historic milestone for the indie studio A24, shattering the previous opening-weekend record held by Civil War, which debuted at $25.7 million.

The Rare Phenomenon of Obsession

While Backrooms dominates the top spot, the second-place film, Obsession, is achieving a rare feat in cinema. Directed by Curry Barker, the horror movie is currently tracking for a $26.4 million weekend.

Most wide-release films typically experience a 50% to 70% drop in revenue by their second weekend. Obsession has defied this trend, growing its earnings in its second and third weeks. According to data reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it is the first film since 1982 to achieve growth in both its second and third weekends.

The YouTube Filmmaker Pipeline

The success of these creators follows the performance of Iron Lung, a video game adaptation directed by Mark Fischbach (Markiplier), which grossed nearly $41 million domestically earlier this year. Barker, who gained industry attention with his 2024 film Milk & Serial, is already attached to direct a remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Industry experts suggest that these creators possess a specific advantage. In a recent analysis, Rutgers Cinema general manager Alex DelVecchio noted that while many digital creators struggle to transition to mainstream film, directors like Parsons and Barker maintain “longevity.”

  • Audience Loyalty: Years of consistent content creation have built dedicated fanbases that support their transition to the big screen.
  • Competitive Performance: Both Backrooms and Obsession are currently outperforming The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is tracking for $24 million this weekend.
  • Strategic Growth: Unlike typical blockbusters, these horror hits are relying on strong word-of-mouth to sustain ticket sales over multiple weeks.
