Google Launches $9.99 AI Health Coach on May 19
Google is set to overhaul its fitness ecosystem by rebranding the Fitbit app to Google Health and introducing a new AI-powered health coach. The service, which leverages Gemini AI, will officially launch globally on May 19, coinciding with the retail debut of the new Fitbit Air fitness band.
This initiative represents a significant evolution in Google’s fitness strategy following its 2021 acquisition of Fitbit. By centralizing its health-tracking efforts, the company aims to move beyond basic metrics, offering a more personalized experience that acts as a fitness coach, sleep expert, and wellness advisor.

Subscription Details and Access
The AI coaching feature is included within the Google Health Premium subscription, which retains the pricing model previously associated with Fitbit Premium:
- Monthly: $9.99
- Annual: $99
- Bundle benefit: Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers receive access at no additional cost.
Initially, the service will be available to select Fitbit and Pixel Watch users. While the app is open for download to a wider audience, those without compatible hardware will have to wait for further updates on device support.
How the AI Coach Operates
Upon onboarding, the system requires users to input specific details, including health objectives, daily routines, available exercise equipment, and any relevant injuries. This data allows the AI to generate tailored guidance.
Interaction with the coach is designed to be conversational. Users can utilize natural language to update their goals or dictate logs regarding meals, workouts, and medical records. Alternatively, information can be submitted through photo or file uploads.

Deep Integration Across Tabs
The coach resides in the “Today” tab, synthesizing information from fitness metrics, sleep patterns, nutrition, environmental factors, and cycle tracking. For users who grant access, it can also incorporate U.S. medical records to provide a comprehensive health summary.
Google has also implemented the AI across other key areas of the app, including:
- Fitness Tab: Enhanced workout suggestions and activity guidance.
- Sleep Tab: Advanced sleep tracking analysis.
- Health Tab: Aggregated metrics and wellness insights.

The company confirmed that the feature has been in public preview since last year, with ongoing refinements based on user feedback to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the advice provided.
