Meta gives parents new tools to monitor teen AI chats
Meta is expanding its parental supervision features, allowing guardians to monitor the subjects their teens discuss with Meta AI. The update, announced this Thursday, provides parents with a dedicated “Insights” tab within the company’s existing supervision hub.
This new functionality displays a summary of the topics a teenager has engaged with over the previous seven days across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. By selecting specific categories, parents can drill down into subcategories to better understand the nature of these AI-driven conversations.
Available Topic Categories
According to Meta, the insights cover a broad spectrum of interests. Parents can view engagement levels across several primary areas:
- School and Education: General academic inquiries.
- Entertainment: Media, movies, and pop culture.
- Lifestyle: Includes fashion, food, and holiday planning.
- Health and Wellbeing: Covers mental health, physical fitness, and general wellness.
- Travel and Writing: Specialized topics for creative or logistical tasks.
Global Rollout and Safety Context
The feature is currently active in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with a broader international release scheduled for the coming weeks. This rollout follows a period of heightened scrutiny regarding how the company handles the safety of younger users.
In January, Meta suspended access to its interactive “AI characters”—personas modeled after celebrities or specific roles—globally. This move preceded a court ruling in New Mexico where the company was held legally liable for failing to protect minors on its platforms. The new supervision tools appear designed to address ongoing concerns from regulators and families about transparency in AI interactions.
Beyond the topic summaries, Meta is also providing parents with suggested conversation starters to facilitate open dialogue about AI usage. Furthermore, the company is establishing an AI Wellbeing Expert Council to provide guidance on the future development of products tailored for teen demographics.
