X Adds Grok-Powered Auto-Translate and AI Photo Editing

X is expanding its platform capabilities with the global rollout of automatic post translation and a sophisticated AI-powered photo editor. Both features leverage xAI’s Grok models, marking a significant push to enhance how users interact with content across different languages and media formats.

Global Reach via Automatic Translation

Nikita Bier, head of product at X, confirmed the worldwide deployment of the automatic translation feature. The tool is designed to break down language barriers, allowing posts to reach a broader international audience. Users retain control over the experience; by selecting the gear icon on a translated post, they can disable the automatic translation for specific languages if they prefer reading the original text.

We're rolling out auto-translate worldwide to give posts in any language global reach on X.

The translations are powered by Grok and have improved substantially over the last couple months.

If you prefer to read in the original language, you can always turn off auto-translate…

This move follows a trend among social networks seeking to increase global engagement, similar to initiatives previously explored by platforms like Reddit.

New AI-Driven Image Editing Tools

Beyond translation, X is introducing a revamped image editor to its iOS application. The update provides users with a suite of creative and privacy-focused tools:

  • Manual Editing: Integration of standard drawing and text tools.
  • Privacy Blur: A dedicated feature to redact sensitive information or obscure faces in photos.
  • AI Prompts: Users can request specific edits via natural language, such as transforming a standard photo into a museum-style painting.

While these capabilities align X with other industry leaders like Google and Adobe, which have previously integrated text-to-edit AI features, the company has not yet clarified if the new image tools will be restricted to paid subscribers. X confirmed that plans are already in motion to bring these updates to the Android version of the app in the near future.

The company’s focus on AI-driven image modification follows earlier controversy regarding deepfake content. Earlier this year, Elon Musk faced criticism from global authorities after platform features allowed the unauthorized sexualization of images, leading X to restrict its image-generation tools to paid users.
