Amazon Brings AI-Powered Alexa+ to Music App

Amazon is expanding the capabilities of its AI-powered assistant, Alexa+, by integrating the tool directly into the Amazon Music mobile application. Announced this Tuesday, the update is now rolling out to iOS and Android users who participate in the Alexa+ Early Access program.

The integration represents a significant shift from the standard voice commands previously available on the platform. Rather than relying on simple, rigid inputs, Alexa+ utilizes generative AI to facilitate natural, back-and-forth conversations regarding music discovery.

New Conversational Features

Subscribers can access the feature by tapping the “a” icon located in the bottom-right corner of the app. Once activated, the system can handle complex queries that go beyond basic playback controls. Examples of these capabilities include:

  • Identifying songs based on remembered lyrics or the movies/TV shows where they were featured.
  • Exploring deeper context, such as the artistic influences behind specific musicians.
  • Generating custom playlists based on descriptive prompts, such as requesting “2010s hits that keep me moving fast” starting with a specific artist.
  • Providing personalized music recommendations based on user-defined social contexts.

Data and Strategic Positioning

Initial usage data suggests that the conversational approach is driving higher engagement. According to Amazon, users testing the feature are exploring three times more songs than those using the original assistant, with those seeking recommendations showing a 70% increase in music consumption.

First introduced during the company’s February hardware event, Alexa+ is categorized as one of the first consumer-facing “agent” tools, designed to perform tasks like booking reservations and ordering groceries. Currently, the tool has reached over one million users.

This rollout arrives as competition in the streaming space intensifies, particularly following Spotify’s integration with ChatGPT. By deepening its AI capabilities—which already include AI-generated weekly playlists and advanced search features—Amazon is positioning its streaming service to better compete for listener retention in an increasingly automated market.
