Mirror Founder Brynn Putnam Unveils Gaming Console ‘Board’

Brynn Putnam, the entrepreneur behind the home fitness brand Mirror, is entering the gaming market with a new venture called Board. The startup aims to merge the physical interaction of traditional board games with digital technology, creating a shared experience for friends and family.

Hardware and Design

The core of the product is a 24-inch screen framed in a wood finish, designed to sit flat on a table. The device functions as a gaming platform that recognizes physical objects, gestures, and touch inputs, bridging the gap between digital software and tactile gameplay.

At launch, the console carries a price tag of $500. It arrives with a library of 12 games and 50 physical game pieces intended to facilitate play for groups of four to six people.

The Role of AI

Putnam envisions the platform evolving through the integration of artificial intelligence. According to the founder, future updates will leverage AI for personalization, including adaptive storylines, voice-to-text functionality, and accessibility features like real-time translation.

“Over time, AI really makes anyone able to create on board. So Board becomes more than a game console. It becomes a place for creative self-expression,” Putnam explained.

Business Strategy and Funding

The company is currently utilizing an internal studio to produce games, but it plans to eventually open the platform to external developers. A future app store is expected to allow third-party creators to contribute their own experiences to the console.

The startup has secured $15 million in funding to date, with a Series A round currently underway. Backers include Lerer Hippeau, which led the seed round for Mirror, alongside First Round and Box Group.

When asked about the pivot from fitness to gaming, Putnam noted that play serves as a universal language. “With fitness, not everyone loves working out, and not everyone loves working out at home, but play really unites us,” she said.
