AI Music Startup Suno Hits $5.4B Valuation After $400M Raise

Suno, the developer behind a prominent AI music-generation platform, has secured $400 million in a Series D funding round. The investment pushes the company’s valuation to $5.4 billion, a significant jump from the $2.45 billion valuation it commanded only seven months ago.

Still facing copyright lawsuits, AI music generator Suno raises another $400M

The fresh capital injection arrives as the startup remains embroiled in complex legal battles regarding its training data. Suno has acknowledged that its models are trained on copyrighted music, maintaining that its practices fall under the legal doctrine of “fair use.” However, major industry players continue to challenge this stance in court.

Legal Challenges and Industry Tensions

The list of plaintiffs pursuing legal action against the company includes major record labels such as Universal Music Group (UMG) and Sony, as well as the German collection society GEMA. While Warner Music Group (WMG) opted to settle and establish a licensing agreement with Suno last November, others remain steadfast in their litigation.

The scope of the allegations has expanded significantly since the initial lawsuits were filed in 2024. Labels originally claimed the startup had utilized 560 of their works without authorization. In recent filings, however, the plaintiffs seek to include over 61,000 additional copyrighted songs, citing discovery processes that suggest millions of recordings may have been processed by the AI.

Market Momentum and Investor Backing

Despite these legal hurdles, the startup’s growth trajectory remains aggressive. Suno continues to maintain a strong presence on music app charts. Internal data from a pitch deck previously reported by Billboard indicated that users were generating more than 7 million songs daily during the company’s Series C round.

The latest funding round was led by Bond Capital, with participation from several prominent firms:

  • IVP and Forerunner
  • Union Square Ventures
  • Alkeon and Quiet
  • Existing investors including Matrix, Lightspeed, Menlo Ventures, and Schroders Capital

Suno stated that the round also included investments from various artists, producers, and songwriters, though it did not disclose specific identities. This silence on individual supporters is noteworthy, as public endorsements from industry creators could potentially counter the perception that the music community is entirely aligned against the platform’s development.
